Blog 02- Understanding Employee Discipline
Understanding Employee Discipline
Employee discipline is one of the most challenging and taxing aspects of HR for many HR professionals. It's natural to feel unsure or stressed when conducting this procedure, especially if you're new to it. There are, fortunately, useful attitudes and behaviors to adopt.
Employee discipline refers to a company's response when an employee violates the company's rules and policies. Employee punishment should be beneficial and contribute to everyone's safety and enjoyment at work. The emphasis is on strategies for improvement and progress rather than punishment and consequences.
What is Discipline?
Discipline is the foundation of good labor relations. Employee discipline must be promoted and maintained for an organization to run well. The correct maintenance of discipline is linked to employee morale and industrial harmony. Discipline can also assist an employee in being more productive. One person's actions can have an impact on the rest of the group. The goal is to look at what discipline is, what types of employee discipline exist, and how constructive discipline might be implemented. We'll also look at the steps in the disciplinary procedure and how to handle indiscipline.
Important Objectives
ü To foster a spirit of tolerance and a willingness to adapt among employees.
ü To delegate authority or responsibility.
ü To improve employee productivity by increasing their working efficiency or morale, lowering manufacturing costs, and improving quality.
ü To foster an environment that values human personality and human relationships.
Characteristics of a Sound Disciplinary System
ü Immediate- Just as when you touch a red hot stove, you get a burn right away, the penalty for breaking the rules should be immediate as well.
ü Consistent- Just as a red hot stove burns everyone in the same way, a sound disciplinary system should have high consistency.
ü Impersonality should be preserved by refraining from personal or subjective feelings, just as a person is burned when he touches a red hot fire and not because of any personal sensations.
Disciplinary Process
Discipline is a management strategy for changing unfavorable performance and behavior through a corrective action procedure. Supervisors are strongly urged to contact Employee Relations staff for assistance at the outset of any employee performance or conduct issues.
